Ditching Plastic and PLA Straws:
Ditching Plastic and PLA Straws:
The UK Government’s decision to ban plastic straws in 2020 was a significant environmental achievement. However, the effectiveness of the ban has been questioned as many places continue to offer what appears to be plastic straws.
These are, in fact, PLA straws – PLA plastic, or polylactic acid, is a biodegradable, plant-based alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics, derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugar cane. The problem is that it’s not as eco-friendly as it sounds. It needs extensive chemicals and processing, and only decomposes under very specific conditions otherwise it can take as long to break down as regular plastic. In the ocean, PLA straws are just as harmful to marine life as traditional straws. With plastic taking centuries to decompose and our planet drowning in plastic waste, it’s time to make the switch!
Introducing SustainaBuddies Wheat Straws:
- Crafted from 100% natural wheat, our straws exude elegance and sophistication.
- Tasteless and sturdy, they don't break down in hot or cold drinks, making them reusable throughout your day or night.
- Biodegradable and compostable, they decompose in just a few months—even in the ocean!
- Their diameter varies between 3-6mm, and they come in two lengths: cocktail (13cm) and standard (20cm).
- Our portable box of 50 straws lets you flaunt your eco-friendly lifestyle on the go.
- They’re a great conversation starter, and believe it or not – they’re certifiably gluten free!
Sip on This:
Ideal for hot drinks like milk, juice, water, wine, cocktails, fizzy drinks, coffee, iced coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. However, due to their slim diameter, they’re not suitable for thick beverages like smoothies or frozen/crushed ice drinks.
How do you make a wheat straw:
It’s very simple! In fact wheat straws have been used for thousands of years, with the first documented use dating back to nearly 10,000 BC!
- Processing wheat
The wheat is grown, harvested, and the stems are trimmed, cleaned, dried, and sterilized through a 5-step chemical-free process.
- By-products
The wheat is sourced from Asia where wheat by-products are often burned, contributing to air pollution. In Europe, they’re utilized for animal feed. By sourcing from Asia we put this product to better use!
- Transportation
Finally, the straws are shipped via sea transport to the UK. Sea transport is the method of international transport with the lowest CO2 emissions.
Circular Product Lifecycle & Sustainability:
Wheat straws goes through a constant cycle of being manufacturer into a useful product, and then biodegrading naturally into something that then feeds the next lifecycle of the product. Did you know that cultivating wheat uses a fraction of the amount of water needed for all of the other food items that we eat on a daily basis – it’s low on CO2 emissions too! Wheat is a highly sustainable crop and by using a by-product of wheat production, our straws do not contribute to any deforestation.
Choosing ethical, renewable, and sustainable materials promotes a healthier planet, supports responsible sourcing practices, and contributes to a greener future.

Gluten free wheat? How?
Gluten is found only in the grain part of wheat, which is removed during the harvest. Since our straws only use the stem, they are certified gluten free. Don’t just take our word for it! We’ve had them lab tested and they’re well below the 20PPM (particles per million) ‘gluten free’ limit.
